Obituary: Thomas Kenneth Twedt Sr.

October 25, 1947 – September 9, 2026

Tom was born October 25, 1947, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Kenneth Thomas Twedt and Lajla Kiewell Twedt. He passed away at home on September 9 with his partner Betty by his side.

His first years were spent in South Dakota. When in the third grade, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, and he finished his schooling there.

In 1965, Tom enlisted in the United States Navy. He was stationed at several bases around the United States. Ultimately, he was assigned to Whidbey Island, Washington, where he spent the majority of his career. He made five aircraft carrier cruises while in the military. He said even though he loved his job, it was hard being away from home so much of the time.

While in the Navy, he received many commendations and ribbons.

He was a Vietnam veteran. Tom loved the Navy and retired after twenty-two years of service.

After retirement, he moved to Fallon, Nevada, and took a job as a security officer at NAS Fallon to get his foot into the door with hopes of achieving the position he wanted within the company. Before long he realized his dream of becoming maintenance supervisor for several different contractors, keeping the airplanes moving and our country safe. He spent another twenty-seven years there before retiring again.

He loved fishing, camping, visiting family in South Dakota and Washington, plus car shows. He owned several classic vehicles and loved showing them off. Over the years, Tom made lifelong friends that had the same interests.

Tom loved his family. He is survived by: Tom Twedt Jr. (Becky), Robert Twedt (Stephanie), Jay Jacks (Karla), Jeff Jacks (Sarah), and Daniel Twedt. There are nineteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren with another due soon.

He is also survived by his loving partner of forty years, Betty Hassard Srinsky; her brothers, Fred and Mike Hassard; her sisters, Dorris McFall and Maggie Hassard; plus four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A service will be held at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley on November 6, 2026, at 11 a.m., with a get-together upstairs at the Depot Casino following the service.
