The Churchill County High School girls soccer team pulled away with five goals in the second half to beat Lowry 7-2 last Friday in its Northern 3A opener.
Lowry scored in the first minute of the second half to tie the game 2-2, but eight minutes later, Fallon’s Evie Jonson broke the tie with a goal in the 49th minute, which was quickly followed by a goal by Karlie Simper in the 51st minute. Kortnie Simper added another goal in the 61st minute to stretch the lead 5-2, then Karlie Simper and Zayrah Miranda each scored less than a minute apart in the 73rd minute to finish things off.
The Greenwave had taken a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals by Kortnie Simper in the 20th minute and Savannah Anderton in the 28th minute, but Lowry cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal in the 35th minute, before tying it in the first minute of the second half.
The game also marked the return of head coach Macy Myers, who missed a couple of weeks after having a baby.
“It is great to have our head coach back at the helm,” assistant coach Neill Tunstead said. “Definitely makes the team happy to have her back.”
Tunstead said the Greenwave measures each season how they perform against Lowry.
“I personally love hosting Lowry’s ladies soccer team,” he said. “Right through that program from players and coaches, they’re great competitors. They remind me of Wimbledon FC from when I was growing up in that area, in the style of play they bring.”
The Greenwave goes back on the road this weekend, playing at Elko Friday at 4:45 p.m. and at Spring Creek at 11:45 a.m. Saturday.
