Allison’s Book Report: “Honolulu” by Alan Brennert

This week, I have a beautiful piece of historical fiction from one of my favorite authors, Alan Brennert.  I love how well he weaves a story, and you may remember some of his other books from previous Book Reports. Like those other books, this one will definitely have you turning those pages as fast as you can until you get to the end.

Set in early 20th-century Hawaii, “Honolulu” by Alan Brennert tells the captivating story of Jin, a brave young Korean woman who takes the name Regine as she seeks to escape a life of severe poverty and strict patriarchal expectations in her home village. Drawn across the vast Pacific Ocean by the promise of personal freedom, true independence, and a fresh start with a prospective husband, she arrives in Hawaii as a hopeful picture bride. However, she quickly discovers that the reality awaiting her on the islands is vastly different from the polished photographs and glowing, optimistic letters she was shown back home. Her new husband proves to be cruel and abusive, forcing Regine to dig deep into her inner strength, intelligence, and resilience just to survive in an unfamiliar and overwhelming land.

Determined to forge her own independent path, Regine gradually learns to adapt to her new surroundings, finding comfort and unexpected joy in the vibrant, multicultural mosaic of Honolulu. As she navigates the harsh, backbreaking labor conditions of early sugarcane plantation life and eventually transitions into the energetic, bustling heart of Chinatown, she gradually builds a new life through her talents as a skilled seamstress. Along the way, she forms deep, meaningful bonds with a diverse group of fellow immigrant women—including Japanese, Portuguese, Hawaiian, and Korean wives—who share her daily struggles, personal losses, and long-held dreams. Through these rich, supportive friendships, Regine learns how to navigate the difficult realities of ethnic prejudice, economic hardship, and rapid social change while steadily working toward her ultimate goal of financial autonomy.

Alan Brennert weaves a vivid, deeply atmospheric tapestry of old Hawaii, masterfully capturing the colorful sights, sounds, smells, and complex social dynamics of an era marked by dramatic transformation. Rather than focusing solely on hardship and struggle, the narrative warmly celebrates the extraordinary power of female solidarity, cross-cultural exchange, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. Regine’s inspiring journey is one of profound self-discovery as she slowly evolves from an obedient, frightened girl into a confident, self-reliant woman who fiercely shapes her own destiny. Warm, immersive, and rich with authentic historical detail, “Honolulu” offers a deeply moving look at the immigrant experience through the eyes of a resilient heroine searching for a place to truly call home.
