Thirty volunteers marked the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks by cleaning and improving the Wolf Center, home of Fallon Daily Bread, during a community day of service Sept. 11.
The volunteers gathered from 3 to 6 p.m. for the JustServe-sponsored project, held in coordination with the national 9/11 Day of Service. They cleared brush and debris from Russian sage, pulled weeds, repainted the Churchill County Coalition’s Karma Box, and deep-cleaned Fallon Daily Bread’s tables and chairs by power-washing them outside.
Children also painted rocks for the center’s rock garden. Tumbleweed Garbage Disposal donated the use of garbage cans and hauled away six cans of brush and debris.
Assemblyman Greg Koenig attended with his wife, Terra, and their grandchildren. Terra Koenig, the northwestern Nevada JustServe specialist, painted rocks with her grandson Beck Brown.
“Maddox, 2 1/2, was so focused on his blue rock with several coats of paint, making sure it was perfect,” Koenig said. “It’s never about rocks, it’s about creating community and shining light, even for littles.”
Nine-year-old Hattie Sorensen also participated with her sister, Juniper Sorensen.
“I loved painting rocks,” Hattie said. “Serving others makes me feel good.”
Mike Berney, chairman of the board of church trustees at Epworth United Methodist Church, thanked JustServe and the volunteers for their work at the Wolf Center.
“Their volunteer time was indeed appreciated!” Berney said.
The project was part of the national observance encouraging Americans to honor those killed and injured on Sept. 11, 2001, through service. Organizers said 50,000 volunteers in 50 cities packed 20 million meals during the 25th-anniversary effort.
