Just when you think you have everything figured out in the Northern 3A, you have a Friday night that slaps you in the face and calls you a stupid you know what. The demise of Truckee is exaggerated, Spring Creek not there yet and a Fernley slip up. That is why the 3A is the best A.
1. Fallon (5-0, 3-0) (LW: 1) After five straight games to start the season, the league-leading and reigning 3A state champion has a bye week. It’s sad to say but the Greenwave were probably on a bye week in their 51-0 win over Sparks. The score was 44-0 at halftime.

2. Elko (3-1, 3-0) (LW: 3) Last week against Dayton could have been a trap game for Elko, as it hosted Dayton. The Dust Devils are much improved after the program was on life support a handful years ago and brought back to life.
However, it looks like the Indians are getting their feet under them with their first-year head coach. Elko dominated Dayton.
This week @ South Tahoe
3. Truckee (2-2, 1-1) (LW: 4) Death, Taxes and Truckee Football. I apparently forgot that. I have been the ringleader of the Truckee isn’t Truckee anymore talk. Well, I can now stick my foot in my mouth.
It looked like Spring Creek was going to be the darlings of the league, but Truckee said not so fast my friend. The Wolverines jumped on the Spartans early and never looks back.
This week vs. Dayton
4. Spring Creek (3-1, 2-1) (LW: 2) Meanwhile, I was leader of the Spring Creek bandwagon from the start of the season. I still think they are a pretty good team. I did not expect the outcome against Truckee. But that was more about the Wolverines. In order to get to the top of the Northern 3A, the Spartans need to win these games.
This week vs. Fernley
5. South Tahoe (4-1, 2-1) (LW: 6) If I was surprised by the Spring Creek/Truckee score, I was doubly surprised with South Tahoe beating Fernley 19-16. It was the first game and Homecoming for the Vaqueros. The Vikings decided to spoil the party. Fernley graduated quite a bit from last year and is still finding its way.
This week: vs. Elko
6. Fernley (2-3, 1-2) (LW: 5) A usual lock for the Northern 3A postseason, Fernley is now looking to battle for one of those playoff spots. The Vaqueros lone league win was against Sparks and we can’t learn anything from that. With losses to Elko and South Tahoe and three straight games against Spring Creek, Truckee and Fallon, Fernley needs an upset somewhere in there. The season finale against Dayton could be a fight for a playoff berth.

7. Dayton (2-3, 1-2) (LW 7) This was Dayton’s chance to show it can get back to playing completive against the top teams in the 3A. Instead, Elko showed by its still one of the bluebloods in the Northern 3A. In the long run, the Dust Devils are OK. They should easily beat Sparks but have Truckee, Spring Creek and Fallon to play. The season-finale versus Fernley could be for all the marbles.

8. Lowry (1-3, 0-2) (LW 8) The best thing to happen for Lowry was being on a bye week. The Buckaroos are the 49ers of the Northern 3A with injuries. I don’t see an electric substation anywhere near, so we can’t use that as an excuse. Lowry gets healthy this week playing Sparks. In an SEC scheduling moment, Lowery finishes @ South Tahoe, vs. Spring Creek, A Truckee, @ Fernley and vs. Fallon. The schedule maker needs to be burned at the stake.

9. Sparks (0-4, 0-2) (LW: 9): It is disheartening to see how Sparks has fallen. New schools, open enrollment and being an inner-city school has taken students away from the school. It stinks, but the Railroaders may need to look at going independent.
