Midseason bye gives undefeated Fallon chance to fine-tune for second half

Midseason bye gives undefeated Fallon chance to fine-tune for second half

With five games down and five to go in the regular season, Churchill County High School football coach Calvin Connors considers this week’s bye as perfectly placed chance for the Greenwave to fine tune things for the second half of the season and a potentially deep playoff run.

The Greenwave beat Sparks 58-0 last Friday, their third straight dominating league win after two dramatic wins over 5A foes.

At 5-0 at the halfway point of the regular season, coach Calvin Connors noted that splitting the schedule into two distinct halve gives the Greenwave a built-in opportunity to evaluate their strengths and implement some new plays and formations they want to use in the second half of the season and in the playoffs.

“It's 100% that way and we use this time to implement more stuff that we didn't show in the first half of our season,” Connors said.

The break follows dominant performances against Truckee – where the Greenwave scored on offense defense and special teams – and a blowout of Sparks that allowed second-and third-string players valuable game time.

“Our goal every week is to get better and better, so by the time you hit the end of the regular season and the postseason, you're peaking at the right time,” Connors said. “That Truckee game was a good culmination of being battle tested early on in our season.”

Camden Richardson threw two touchdown passes against Sparks, one to Calin Anderson and the other to Drake Rowlett, while Rio Segura tossed a pair to Dylan Lanterman Amolar. Rylan Clark, Nathaniel Bianchi, Kenyon Wilson and Jaeshon Pearson each ran for a score.

The defense contributed a safety and held Sparks to minus-24 total yards for the game.

Connors said he’s pleased with how the Greenwave has played in all five games, especially the way the offense, defense and special teams have all contributed.

“We haven't gone into a game yet this season that felt like we didn't do a good job,” he said. “We're picking each other up in all phases and that's a sign of a really good team.”

The Vaqueros return to action next week at Spring Creek, but Connors said they will spend most of their bye week focused on themselves before they put together a game plan for Spring Creek.

“We're just going to keep looking to get better during this bye week and work on our foundation, what we have in offense, defense, and special teams-wise, and then start to build off of that foundation in all three phases,” he said.

This is a reminder that we as citizens live in a representative form of government and why it is so important that we vote as voting is our way of making our voice heard.
