Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge celebrated a ribbon cutting for its headquarters at 3175 Freeman Lane on Sept. 12. Lucy Carnahan, executive director of the Fallon Chamber of Commerce, hosted the event.
Deputy Refuge Manager Bethany Chagnon and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officer K. Kasper greeted attendees during the daylong activities. Kasper, a Federal Wildlife Officer, explained his duties and responsibilities to the refuge.
As part of the refuge’s restoration work, Chagnon is testing hardy, fast‑growing, wildlife‑friendly plants that may be suitable for replanting severely burned areas and reducing soil erosion after fires. She said the plants were originally started two years ago by Jaime Sammons’ Plant Science Class at Churchill County High School, a project now helping support the refuge’s restoration work.
The event also featured arts and crafts for children, live music by Steven Blais, fine art exhibits by local artists, and snacks and drinks.
