COVID Update: Vaccines for 16+ Available Soon

COVID Update: Vaccines for 16+ Available Soon

Good news hailed from Carson City on Wednesday, March 17, as Governor Sisolak released information regarding more vaccination opportunities for Nevadans.

Starting on March 22, vaccines will be available to all residents over the age of 16 with underlying health conditions. On April 5, anyone 16 years and old that wants to receive the vaccine may begin scheduling appointments. According to Sisolak, these vaccinations will be distributed through the State’s Retail Pharmacy Program.

“This is a critical step forward in our vaccination effort that will allow more Nevadans to schedule appointments and receive their shot. By continuing our strong push to vaccinate high risk Nevadans, including seniors, individuals with underlying conditions, frontline workers, individuals with disabilities, and Nevadans experiencing homelessness, we are working to protect the most vulnerable in our State,” said Gov. Sisolak. “On April 5, all Nevadans aged 16 and above will be eligible for the vaccine and the State will work closely with our local partners to ensure we’re putting as many doses as possible into arms every day. This timeline should remind Nevadans that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, but we must continue to remain vigilant until more residents can get vaccinated.”

State and local health officials will continue their efforts to vaccinate eligible Nevadans, who are encouraged to schedule their vaccination appointment as soon as possible.

This announcement by the governor is in accord with Pres- ident Joe Biden’s vaccine challenge to “open up availability to all adult Americans by May 1.” State officials are confident in the new timeline with the expectation of increased vaccine production and allocation to the State of Nevada.

According to Sisolak’s press releases, while Nevadans aged 16 and over will be eligible to schedule appointments beginning on April 5, appointment availability may be limited for the first few weeks. Based on the federal government’s dose allocation, State officials encourage Nevadans to be patient with the process. Also, Nevadans are reminded that they can check their county-specific plan at NVCOVIDFighter.org or by calling the State hotline at 1-800-401-0946.

Locally, COVID-19 test positivity numbers remain low, even though some experts warn that lessened restrictions may cause a resurgence of the virus. As of March 17, Churchill County’s test positivity rate decreased from 5.9% to 3.7% over the last week.
