City of Fallon Mayor, Ken Tedford announced this morning that the annual Christmas Tree Lighting will take on a whole new look this year with drive-by hot chocolate and cookies from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., a tour of locally decorated homes, and fireworks beginning at 8:00 p.m. at the Fairgrounds. The tree will be lit sometime in the late afternoon.

“We were on the County Board of Health meeting last week,” said Mayor, “and listened to the report from the hospital that they are at 140% capacity and the Reno hospitals are not taking any referrals because they don’t have enough personnel. We have to take care of everyone in Fallon.”

He said his number one job as mayor is public safety and it wouldn’t be right to hold a “super spreader” event.

The intent is to still celebrate, but in a different manner and do some different things for the public to enjoy. “I know there will be people who are upset and people who understand, but no one will be surprised,” he said.

The plan is to light the tree sometime during the late afternoon on Friday, December 4th  and then serve hot chocolate and cookies from the Carson Street Annex beginning at 6:00 p.m. The city will provide a list of addresses at the hot chocolate pick-up, of the houses that have been decorated around the community, so people can do their own drive-by tour of the local lights.

“We are gathering a list of houses that are lit and people can drive through neighborhoods,” said Tedford. The link to add an address to that list can be found at: City of Fallon Outdoor Christmas Decorations. The city staff will post the list on Facebook and their website as well.

At 8:00 p.m. an extended 30-minute long fireworks show will begin at the Fairgrounds, with KVLV playing Christmas carols on the radio.

City staff is also working on an idea to have people bring an ornament to city hall which will be hung on the tree, and details will be announced soon. “That way families can go see their ornament on the tree as well,” said Tedford.

I was disappointed that there'd be no Christmas tree lighting; we're usually south of the border in the winter time but this year we're home and looking forward to parti***ting in the festivities. Now I'm happy. A lot of thought and planning went into the logistics and how to keep the community safe this season. Thanks everyone involved for making the community happy and keeping them safe.

We are very fortunate for many reasons to live in Fallon. I hope people realize that and can appreciate what our officials do for the citizens of Fallon and Churchill County. Thank you, Mayor Tedford and your staff! And, thank you to County officials, Sheriff's Dept., and City Police for all you do!
