Book Review -- "Old Lovegood Girls"

A book by Gail Godwin and reviewed by Carol Lloyd
Book Review -- "Old Lovegood Girls"

Feron Hood and Merry Jellicoe are paired as roommates at Lovegood College in 1958. And so begins a lifelong friendship of these two very different women.

Merry is the daughter of tobacco farmers and Feron has barely escaped a dark past. Only together for a semester they manage to form a bond that only strengthens over time, despite long periods of silence.

Both are writers and the book is full of literary references. We get to know both women as well as the people in their orbit, but ultimately this is a book about the power of friendship.

Carol Lloyd is the Churchill County Librarian. During this COVID crisis she has managed to keep the library "accessable" and open to her customers through the innovative use of technology. But she misses the people in her library orbit who have also become friends.
