Senior Spotlight: Parker Jones

Welding, Archery, Lacrosse, and FFA have kept Senior Parker Jones busy throughout his school career at Oasis Academy.
“I’ve been at Oasis since third grade and have enjoyed my social and educational experience,” said Jones.
The social experiences make up some of his favorite memories of his time at Oasis. “Christmas and Halloween parties in middle school are my favorite memories of the school.’’
As far as the academic aspect, Jones has one teacher he would like to thank. “I would like to thank Ms. Jackie Bogdanowicz for her help and guidance over the years. Biology with Ms. Bogdanowicz was my favorite class. She always made it fun and interesting to learn,” added Jones.
Jones is an accomplished welder as well. The senior has many certifications including shielded metal arc welding, is certified in all position welding (flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead), and this semester is working toward obtaining a gas metal arc welding (Mig) certification. Jones has also worked on several projects and even created a small working cannon.
“My advice for future students is to keep up on your homework and don’t get behind.”
Upon graduating in May with both his high school diploma and Associate of Science Degree from Western Nevada College, Jones will begin a career in welding.
Thanksgiving Balloon Parade

Mrs. Melinda Santos’s third-grade class helped prepare everyone for the Thanksgiving holiday with a balloon parade through the school.
Inspired by the book “Balloons Over Broadway,” the class completed a STEAM project. Students learned about the puppeteer who created the original floats for Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Drawing from this inspiration, students were tasked with creating their own balloon float for a class parade.
“This project seemed like a fun way to celebrate the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and it gave students an opportunity to show their creativity. This is a great precursor to our big Market Day project coming up in the Spring. Students loved showing their individuality and coming up with ideas for their floats. They were all so excited to parade through the 1st and 2nd-grade classes to show off their creations. They not only worked hard on their own floats but rallied together to help others finish in time for the big finale,” said Santos.

Pajamas for Cancer Day at School

Returning again this year was PJammin’ Day for Cancer at Oasis Academy. The fun day is a way for students to be involved in a worthy cause as we approach the holiday season.
“Oasis Academy students & staff from kindergarten through 8th grade were “PJamm’in for Cancer on Thursday, November 17, 2022, to raise funds for the American Childhood Cancer Society. Students could come to school in their PJ’s for a $1 donation. There was great participation and fun was had by all. The Middle School Student Council raised $649. Way to go, Bighorns,” said Lauren Kelly, Student Council advisor.

Academy at the Tree Lighting

Stop by the Oasis Academy table at the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony this year. The school will be handing out ornament kits and lollipops.
“The Christmas Tree Lighting is a huge part of our community, and we are thrilled to be a part of it again. Last year we handed out four hundred reindeer ornament kits and candy canes. This year’s kit is just as cute. The holiday season is a wonderful time of year, and we are happy to be able to spread a little cheer at the event,” said Public Relations Coordinator Angela Viera.
