The author calls off her wedding and 10 days later finds herself in Texas participating in a scientific study on whooping cranes. She ties that experience in with the Japanese folktale of the same title to show how she barely escaped living a life of someone else’s making.

Hauser takes a look at her evolving life and attitudes through a series of essays. Her take on Audrey Hepburn’s character in The Philadelphia Story and why she choose who she did to marry, is particularly entertaining. Especially as her insights change as she gets older.
It makes me want to watch the film. And frankly, I’m not sure I ever saw it in its entirety. Blood: Twenty Seven Love Stories is the opening essay and a nice background to her quirky family. This is an engaging read.
