Bighorn Bulletin -- Oasis Academy Update Ellie O'Flaherty and the Science Camp

Summer Camps Provide New Fun Learning Opportunities

In its inaugural summer, the Oasis Academy Summer Enrichment Camps filled within hours. The two-hour, three-day-a-week camps are offered throughout June. This year’s camps will focus on Spanish and Science.

“We were absolutely thrilled with the response to these camps. It is clear that our families are looking for fun, meaningful activities over the summer. We are hopeful we have the resources to expand these offerings next summer,” said Oasis CEO Melissa Mackedon.

The camps are tailored by grade levels. The Science camps have themes such as Chem-mystery, Candy-ology, All Things Fizzy, All Things Engineering, and Chemistry is Cool. The Spanish Camps will introduce students to Conversational Spanish in a fun way and are being taught by Ellie O’Flaherty.

Best Part of Me Project

When teacher Janet Renfroe was looking for a writing project for her third-grade students she came across the Best Part of Me Project. It made an impact on the veteran teacher and she knew she wanted to incorporate it into the curriculum.

“I decided on the Best Part of Me Writing Project because I wanted to boost self-confidence in my students and have them think inwardly on what made them special to show how awesome they are in their uniqueness,” said Renfroe.

For the Best Part of Me writing activity the classes first read “The Best Part of Me” as a group. Each student then chooses which of their physical features is their favorite, and writes about the feature, describing why they chose it as their favorite.

The answers varied from everything from hair to eyes to teeth and legs. But answering why those features were their favorites was touching to read. One student said his hands were his favorite because “they help him do good deeds.”

“My favorite thing from the writing was seeing how insightful each student was. They constantly surprised me with which feature they chose and their reasons for choosing it.” described Renfroe.

Coffee Cart Gets Upgraded

Every Monday and Wednesday morning the Comprehensive Life Skills students deliver coffee orders to staff and at the end of the school year their once simple cart got an upgrade.

“The coffee cart business has been a long-standing tradition at Oasis Academy. The students in the Life Skills Program shop for the supplies, make the coffee, deliver the coffee all over campus, and learn to budget using their income. With the thanks to one particular student and his family, the students now have a well-crafted, beautifully refurbished coffee cart that was upcycled using an antique snow cone stand,” said teacher Amanda Yanger.

Thanks to the generosity of Life Skills student Tyler Wallace’s family, grandfather Milton, and sister Kiley Wallace, the new and improved coffee cart proudly displays school spirit with Bighorn blue paint and a logo on the side. Along with looking amazing, the cart suits the needs of the students perfectly.

The Life Skills Program teaches students everyday skills including cooking, cleaning, business skills, and more. The coffee cart provides daily interaction with staff and practice for the skills learned.

“Thank you so very much to the Wallace family. The coffee cart will be used for many years to come, and it wouldn't have been made possible without your support and generosity,” said Yanger.
