Work-Based Learning Students Learn Business Start to Finish Sara McGowan Jaylen David and Troy Willis run the Wave Business Leaders microenterprise t-shirt shop at CCHS

The Wave Business Leaders, taught by Sara McGowan, is a class that puts Work-Based Learning into practice and the name incorporates the acronym WBL. They are currently running an apparel shop on the Churchill County High School campus. Students Jaylen David and Troy Willis have taken on the challenge of a micro-enterprise, from start to finish. They give quotes on orders, design, make the products and complete the sales.

“We want to be sensitive to our community small businesses,” said McGowan, “So they only are making things that are related to school.” So far, the WBL Apparel shop has made “Choose Kind” t-shirts for the middle school and the high school principal ordered staff t-shirts.

The students will also be selling a limited supply of this school year's Greenwave Sweatshirts, short sleeve t-shirts, and long sleeve t-shirts before graduation by the gate. Their supply will be first come first served, and sales will be cash only.

McGowan has supervised another work-based learning class for several years, teaching students how to run a small café and providing coffee to teachers on campus. Her students learn how to take and fill orders, order supplies, and maintain accounting.
