It's getting to be that time of year when our sunny and warm days inspire thoughts of planting and turning our outdoor spaces from brown to beautiful. Looking for new ideas? Soroptimist International of Fallon has just the thing – its 21st Annual Home and Garden Show is scheduled for April 23 through April 24 at the Fallon Convention Center starting at 10 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday that weekend.

Marcia Vinson, Home, and Garden Show Chairwoman has led this event since its inception 21 years ago, and just like her own garden she has tended to it, making it flourish more and more every year. She described the event, saying “The Annual Home and Garden show is an opportunity for attendees to talk with the local nurseries, find interesting hand-crafted items, plants, items for personal use, and view home improvement ideas all in one place. This is also a fundraiser so that SI of Fallon can provide scholarships and support other community projects.”

Vendors registered to date include Needle in a Haystack, Susan’s Handmade, Quality First Home Improvement, Coasters Quill Publishing, Lattin Farms, Berney Realty, Argenta Screens, Churchill County Museum, Workman Farms, Tin Can Crafts and Treasures, Banner Hospital, Keener Vintage, 911 Water Service, Pirates with Soles, Copper Point Studios, Blazin' Barnes, Sparkles Jewelry, Scentsy, and Banner Hospital Auxiliary with many others in the registration process. Other organizations participate as well, such as the VFW Auxiliary, Churchill Coalition, Fallon Animal Welfare Group, Churchill County High School, Oasis Academy, and Western Nevada College.

Vinson recruits local vendors and those she finds on Facebook too. “Anytime I see anyone selling anything on Facebook I reach out to them to be vendors. We have about 20 vendors that have paid for their booths already, and that's a great sign at this point.”

Should anyone get hungry or thirsty while perusing vendor offerings, Reap America will be selling sandwiches and other munchies, Kim's Kool Treats will be offering soft-serve ice cream cones, shakes and floats, and the Boy Scouts will be selling soda and candy.

The Hearts of Gold Quilters will be in attendance, offering their custom-made queen/king size quilt again this year. The quilt takes over 100 woman-hours to make, and the designs are themed each year. Raffle tickets for this year's quilt, which will be on display, will be available for sale throughout the Home and Garden show weekend and until August 28 when the drawing is done at this year's Cantaloupe Festival and Country Fair.

Vinson organizes all vendors as well as the volunteers, lines up the raffle prizes, and coordinates all event needs while at the Convention Center. This year's raffle prizes include an adult-size redwood picnic table, a child-size picnic table, a wheelbarrow donated by Louie's Ace Home Center filled with gardening, and outdoor goodies donated by Soroptimist members, gift baskets, and other donated items.

SI of Fallon President Stephanie Alexander added, “This is our longest-running fundraiser, and it just gets better and better every year. It also raises the most for our scholarship programs.”

Soroptimist International is an international volunteer service organization for business, professional and retired women that works to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities around the world. SI of Fallon sponsors the Annual Home and Garden Show as well as other events to raise funds for their community scholarship programs for women and girls that are trying to better themselves.

The suggested donation of $1.00 for admission to the Home and Garden Show goes towards the group's scholarship programs. The Home and Garden Show closes at 4 p.m. on Saturday, and at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
