Maliah's Minute -- Martin Luther King, Jr. From Maliah's trip to Washington D.C. last year

Martin Luther King, Jr. is an inspiration for many. He was a minister, activist, and most of all a world-known leader. He became known for his “I Have A Dream” speech which moved people and the way they saw racism all across the world in the 1960s. The speech was a dream he and many had that America is a void of segregation and racism. His speeches have made a difference in the world, but from his journey to where we are now was harder than others expected.

He is known as a world hero. In his honor, they built a statue of him. I was lucky enough to be able to see it and even take a picture in front of the 30-foot tall statue that has marked me for life because I felt I was standing in the presence of my hero. The one who made me who I can and will be for the rest of my life, an American, a citizen, a person, a part of my community.

When I look back at photos of me in front of Martin Luther King, Jr., I will always remember the reason his statue is not finished and that’s because his job has not yet been finished. We all know there is still racism in the world but if he can start the end to racism, I can sure finish it, we all can together as a community.
