Letter to the Editor -- Jim Johnson
A special thanks to Jim for his letter...please keep them coming

Letter to the Editor,

Over the past several months I’ve read “Letters to the Editor” with a heavy heart. Pretty much all ranting and raving about politics, vaccines, masking, and other negative issues. As I read the letters, I decided I’d rather read something nice, funny, interesting, pretty much anything else – even get a tooth pulled.

I mentioned this fact to Captain Rachel, and she of course said, ”Then why don’t you write something?” So here it goes.

Since retiring 11 years ago, I decided many of the items I relied on others to do I would “attempt” to do myself. It has provided me with many challenges and a few minor disasters, and a tremendous appreciation for what others do for a living. Auto and RV repairs are my most common projects and provide for plenty of excitement and lively conversations with myself and my new friends on YouTube. I’ve also discovered there’s a whole lot of people out there willing to help tell and show you how to do something. Some are better than others, and some I’ve found should not be making and posting “how-to” videos. Rest assured I’ve yet to post a video, although I could post many on how not to.

So, if you ever find yourself bored after retiring, break out the toolbox and try fixing a few things yourself. I’ll guarantee it will fill up a tremendous amount of free time and provide for some good laughs, though it may not be you laughing.

Another piece of advice is to wait until your spouse has left the house, so you don’t have to be told why it would be easier, smarter, and cheaper to take it to someone to fix.

I hope someone else will feel inspired to write to Rachel on an interesting or fun topic so we can all start reading something enjoyable!

I agree with you that people need to take up more constructive, positive hobbies than politics, conspiracies, and complaining. It makes me want to move, even though I have lived here my entire life, because people are such pills (to use my mom’s word). It’s definitely a weird time and it would be lovely to regain civility.
