District Director of the Nevada office of the Small Business Administration, Joseph P. Amato was accompanied to Fallon last week by Regional Administrator Mike Vallante, when they presented the Rural Business of the Year award to Desert Oasis Teff. During an informal gathering at The Grid on Wednesday evening, Amato presented the award to John Getto, his son Myles, and Kristy Hoffman, saying, “you are doing things that are taking everything entrepreneurial to the top, and that’s why you’ve won this award.”
“This is our personal delivery of what we think is one of the greatest gifts SBA does,” said Amato. “I know that personally, because I received the same award back in 1997 and it propelled me into some amazing feats in both business opportunities and wealth.”
Myles Getto accepted the award, thanking both the SBA and the USDA for their assistance with various marketing shows the crew from Desert Oasis Teff has attended over the years. “Desert Oasis Teff was started in 2006 as a way for farmers to make a transition into growing alternative crops in the Lahontan Valley,” he said. “Teff is a gluten-free, high protein grain from Ethiopia, extremely nutrient rich and very good for consumers. We have complete control of the product from start to finish – we grow it, harvest it, package it, and ship it.”
Amato traveled the state last week, along with his SBA staff and Phil Cowee, State Director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and several members of his staff, beginning their rural tour on Monday in Ely. They personally delivered the Small Business Awards this year, due to COVID, instead of hosting their banquet in Las Vegas. Traditionally, the banquet is held during Small Business Week which is normally recognized during the first week of May.
The U.S. Small Business Administration’s 2020 National Small Business Week celebrations officially commence this week with a virtual three-day award ceremony recognizing national award winners from across the country and U.S. territories for their significant accomplishments. The three-day award ceremony will commence Tuesday, September 22, with SBA Administrator Jovita Carranza announcing the 2020 National Small Business Person of the Year.
